If You Like This Show Try This Book...

Reading books and watching TV shows are some of my favorite activities to do. So I thought why not combine them for a blog post?

I know I already did TV shows that book lovers will love, but this time I wanted to do the opposite. I want to give book suggestions based on TV shows you may like.

A lot of people, when trying to find the next book they want to read, will think of genres or storylines they enjoy and try to find books with those similarities. The same can be said for TV shows. So when thinking about books to read, why not try to find some similar to your favorite TV series?

These are just a few suggestions for books, mostly based on shows that I have seen or enjoy.

1. If you like Jane the Virgin try....

Water in May by Ismee Williams

Jane The Virgin follows a young hispanic woman who is accidentally artificially inseminated. Water in May follows the story of a young hispanic teen who finds herself pregnant and is dealing with her baby having a potentially fatal heart condition. While neither of these stories are exactly the same, they both deal with hispanic women whom are dealing with unplanned pregnancy. Jane, the main character of Jane the Virgin, also has a good support system of friends and family. And while Mari, the main character of Water in May, may not have the best family support, her friends are definitely there to help her with her pregnancy and beyond. I think that if you like diversity, drama, supportive friendships, and other aspects of Jane the Virgin, you'll find all those things and more in Water in May.

2. If you like Legends of Tomorrow try...

Invictus by Ryan Graudin

Legends of Tomorrow is one of my favorite shows to watch. I love the idea of time traveling misfits making mistakes & trying to fix history. The book Invictus is very similar to Legends of Tomorrow. It follows a similar theme of a team of people of various relationships, backgrounds, and more coming together to travel through time in a time machine. This book also has an excellent ending that I adored. If you are also a fan of shows like Doctor Who, you'll definitely love this book.

3. If you like Switched At Birth try...

Your Welcome Universe by Whitney Gardner

Switched at Birth follows two families that discover their daughters were switched at birth and how that discovery affects all of their lives. Your Welcome Universe is about a deaf teen named Julia who is also a graffiti artist, who discovers that someone is adding to her tag and makes changes to her artwork. While SAT and YWU may sound very different they actually have a little more in common than you'd think. First of all, both the book and the show deal vastly with deaf culture as Daphne, one of the main characters on the show and one of the daughter's who was switched, is deaf (among various other characters on the show). On Switched at Birth the show also deals a lot with artwork and some street artistry because like Julia, Bay (the other daughter who is switched ) enjoys art and earlier in the series she is very interested in graffiti art, similar to Julia. Both the book and show deal with things like diversity, ableism, stereotypes, and much more. I think if you enjoyed the Switched at Birth series, you will love the book Your Welcome Universe.
